After making your decision, you’ve made an appointment with your future plastic surgeon. Here are the different stages of plastic and aesthetic surgery.
Recourse to a qualified plastic surgeon assures you that he has the training and skills required to limit risk and provide effective treatment, as the need arises.
Checking the qualifications of any surgeon to perform plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery is done through the Ordre des Médecins of the city in which the surgeon practices medicine.
There is a difference between a capable surgeon and a specialist :
A capable surgeon (former system) in aesthetic surgery is a surgeon from another specialty who can perform aesthetic surgery within the scope of his practice.A specialist may perform plastic and aesthetic surgery on the entire body.

DIFFERENT STAGES OF AESTHETIC SURGERY
CONSULTATIONS
Medical consultation :
This is the first contact between the patient and surgeon. The primary objective of this initial consultation is to first establish whether the surgical indications for which the patient seeks advice are favourable, then to provide the patient the most complete information possible.
The surgeon speaks with the patient to become acquainted with his surgical and medical history, usual medical treatments, allergies, tobacco use, etc…
The patient specifies and explains his motivations for the contemplated operation.
A medical examination (with photographs) is carried out and allows the surgical course of treatment to be established.
If the surgical indications are favourable, the decision to operate depends on the motivation and the psychological condition of the patient and sometimes requires complementary examinations.
The surgeon explains the surgical methods, the duration of hospitalization, the location of scars, the type of anaesthesia, post-operative follow-up and possible complications, even exceptional ones.
The surgeon attaches an estimate and an informed mutual consent to the consultation.
The Estimate
The existence of this document is not concerning; on the contrary, more than ever before it protects patients who need to know with whom they are dealing, which operation is being proposed, its location and its cost.
Informed consent
The code of medical ethics specifies that no surgical procedure can be performed without informing the concerned party and obtaining consent.
A large amount of information is given in a very short time, for which reason a second consultation is often necessary.
Second consultation :
After reflecting upon and re-reading the information provided by the surgeon,
the motivated, determined patient often has additional questions.
At this time, the surgeon again explains the surgical methods, responds to all of the patient’s questions and may consider a date for the surgery.
The anaesthesia appointment :
The appointment with the anaesthetist must occur 48 hours prior to the surgical procedure at the latest (in the case of a simple local anaesthetic, no anaesthesia appointment is necessary).
There are three types of anaesthesia :
-
Purely local for operations of short duration (dermatological surgery and superior blepharoplasty in certain cases).
-
Neuroanalgesia or potentiated local (very useful in aesthetic surgery : blepharoplasty, cervico-facial lift, certain lipoaspirations, dermatological surgery) falls between local and general anaesthetic.
-
Monitoring for several hours after the operation is required and upon the consent of the anaesthetist, discharge is possible under strict conditions (prohibition on driving, living near the facility, etc…).
-
General anaesthesia is reserved for operations of long duration (breast hypertrophy, abdominoplasty) or as soon as the patient desires it.
-
Methods of using this anaesthesia have greatly developed over the last fifteen years.
HOSPITALISATION
Hospitalisation may take place the evening before or the morning of the operation, as a function of the anxiety, the need for an additional work-up, or the patient’s wishes.
THE OPERATION AND POST-OPERATIVE FOLLOW-UP
A legally mandated 15 dayS waiting period will be observed between the first consultation and the operation.
For each information sheet, the main complications were provided; the list is not exhaustive.
It is important to realize that surgery always includes a slight risk of unforeseeable, unknown factors, despite taking the greatest precautions.
LEAVING THE CLINIC
The surgeon prescribes necessary dressings, pain medications and gives instructions to follow at home (when to take a shower, when stitches will be removed, etc…).
The date and time of an appointment in consultation with Dr. Benhamou is given to the patient.
Any patient with questions may call Dr. Benhamou.
He is available 24 hours a day and, if need arises, the medical establishment will handle all patient questions.
